The Concrete Monopile
Offshore Foundation Revolution
Revolution
Innovative Foundations
Foundations for offshore wind turbines are traditionally made from steel, which, while durable, is heavy, expensive, and CO₂-intensive to produce. The comoco foundation offers an innovative solution. Made from pre-cast concrete, it is much lighter, more cost-effective, and better suited to greater depths, offering a more sustainable alternative to decarbonize turbine foundations.
Advancement
Concrete Advantages
To meet the rising demand for offshore foundations that are sustainable, cost-effective, and locally manufacturable, a new approach is needed. The concrete monopile provides the durability of steel while being lighter and more adaptable. Concrete has also proven safe and reliable, used successfully in oil platforms since the 1970s.
Potential
Offshore Wind Growth
The World Bank estimates the global technical potential for offshore wind at over 21,000 GW. Between 2017 and 2020, annual offshore wind capacity additions averaged over 5 GW, reaching 21.3 GW by 2021. Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Belgium have committed to a target of 150 GW by 2050. The comoco is suitable for a range of installation methods.
